Nkechi Blessing criticises fake ‘Lagos big girl’ lifestyles, saying she prefers privacy, freedom and genuine wealth over social media validation

Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing has taken aim at what she described as the fake lifestyle associated with some self-styled Lagos “big girls”, questioning the pressure to project wealth and status on social media.

Blessing made the remarks in a Snapchat post on Friday, August 14, 2026, while explaining why she has little interest in impressing people with an extravagant online image.

The actress suggested that some people who appear wealthy on social media may be struggling financially away from the cameras.

“Na una want be friends with self-acclaimed Lagos big girls by force; people wey be say na online aesthetic want wound them. The moment you go close, you go too pity them,” she wrote.

Blessing then jokingly described herself as a “Yankee broke girl”, saying her priorities are simpler than maintaining the appearance of a high-society lifestyle.

“Me, I be Yankee broke girl, I no kuku identify with anything big girl. Make I sha dey see food chop and ticket money to fly round the world… who get pass me no concern me,” she added.

Despite the self-deprecating description, Blessing suggested that her financial position is stronger than her social media presence might imply.

She argued that people should not mistake a lack of flashy posts for a lack of money, saying she would rather preserve her personal space and enjoy her resources privately.

“The pressure to belong to the so-called Lagos big girls can never be for someone like me that likes my space,” she said.

Blessing added that she could comfortably handle substantial financial commitments without feeling the need to advertise her lifestyle online.

“But when matter of N100m to N200m sup, we go chest am without flinching… ‘Cus we no dey post lifestyle; dem go call us broke,” she wrote.

Her comments come amid renewed conversations about social media image, wealth and the pressure to maintain a particular status within Nigeria’s entertainment and high-society circles.

The subject has recently attracted attention following the public fallout between The Real Housewives of Lagos stars Adeola “Diiadem” Adeyemi and Dabota Lawson, whose disagreement spilled onto social media and involved allegations concerning money, business opportunities and public perception.

Blessing’s comments also echo her previous criticism of online judgement.

Earlier this week, the actress spoke against people who shame women over their marital status or childlessness, arguing that outsiders cannot always see the private struggles behind someone’s public image.

Her latest intervention carries a pointed message: an impressive social media feed may reveal what someone wants the public to see, but it does not necessarily tell the full story of their finances or personal life.
