Stars hail a joyful Patience Ozokwor birthday as the Nollywood veteran turns 68 and thanks God, fans and Mama G lovers

Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, widely known as Mama G or Mama General, marked her 68th birthday on Monday, 14 September 2026, with a public note of thanks and a wave of greetings from colleagues across the industry.

Ms Ozokwor, born on 14 September 1958 in Ngwo, Enugu State, shared an AI styled 1980s portrait and wrote that she was celebrating with a grateful heart. “I want to thank God Almighty for long life, good health, sound mind and the knowledge of Him. I am also grateful for all Mama G Lovers. You’ll have been wonderful and loving.”

The veteran, who rose to fame after the 1999 film Authority and has since appeared in more than 100 productions, has long been typecast as the formidable mother or mother in law.

Off screen she is also a gospel singer, evangelist and philanthropist. She studied fine and applied arts at the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, and worked in radio drama before Nollywood took hold.

Awards include Africa Movie Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress in 2012 and 2013, a place on Nigeria’s 2014 centenary honour list, and the Industry Merit Award at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. In 2026 she appeared in Call of My Life, which took more than N628m in six weeks.

The Patience Ozokwor birthday messages were affectionate rather than formal.

Actress Ken Erica wrote, “Happy blessed birthday, Mama General. May God continue to bless and keep you in good health and prosperity.” Actress Ebelle Okaro called her “a great mother, actor, evangelist, and philanthropist” and wished her grace, love and blessings in the new year. Sharon Francis, Sophie Alakija, Susan Peters and Big Brother Naija star Maria added shorter notes, addressing her as mama, mommy and “mummy of Uwanile.”

Ms Ozokwor also posted that she was the one to whom God had shown mercy, and she marked the day with her granddaughter Chiamaka, who shares the same birthday.

In another note she said that as people grow older they see that life is less about looks or possessions than about who they have become and whom they have blessed.

Her private story gives that line its weight. She married at 19 and was widowed in 2000. She has raised a large family of biological and adopted children while remaining a fixture on Nigerian screens. In 2024 she asked for support as she approached 45 years in entertainment.

Last year the Actors Guild of Nigeria hailed her as Nollywood’s general on her 67th birthday. A Hall of Fame honour in Ghana added another public nod while she is still working.

The day itself was simple. A stylised photograph, a prayer for fans and their families, and a chorus of industry voices calling her mother.

For an actress known for steel on screen, the 68th year opened with warmth, faith and the sense that Mama G still commands a loyal house.
