Rita Edochie slams gender bias in marriage, demanding equal forgiveness and accountability for men and women after a viral relationship debate

Nollywood veteran actress Rita Edochie on July 7, 2026, in Nigeria, criticised what she described as unfair gender standards in marriage after reacting to comments made by a pastor during a relationship-focused event.

The actress said men and women should face the same expectations when issues of infidelity and forgiveness arise.

Rita Edochie, known for her decades-long career in Nigerian cinema and her outspoken views on social issues, expressed disappointment after watching a video in which a pastor appeared to suggest different consequences for husbands and wives who commit adultery.

In the video, the pastor reportedly told a woman that if she cheated while her husband was away for an extended period, she would be caught and sent back to her family.

The same message reportedly suggested that a husband who committed a similar offence would receive forgiveness from God.

Reacting through her Instagram page, Rita Edochie said such differences in judgement promote inequality within marriages.

“I am very angry this morning, and I pray this is just a joke and content,” she wrote. “If men can be excused because they are ‘polygamous by nature,’ then women deserve the same grace, the same mercy and the same forgiveness.”

The actress added that wrongdoing should be judged by the same standard regardless of gender.

“If infidelity is a sin, then it is a sin for both. If forgiveness exists, then it should not be reserved for one gender. Justice that favours men while crushing women is not justice,” Rita Edochie stated.

Her comments have generated conversations about traditional expectations placed on men and women in relationships, particularly in societies where cultural and religious views often influence perceptions of marriage roles.

Rita Edochie has previously spoken on family relationships, respect within marriages and the treatment of women. The actress has also used her public platform to caution against behaviours she believes can damage homes and relationships.

The discussion comes amid wider debates around gender equality in African societies, where advocates continue to call for fairness in issues such as marital responsibilities, fidelity and personal accountability.

While some social media users supported Rita Edochie’s position, others argued that cultural and religious interpretations of marriage vary and should be considered within their specific contexts.

The actress maintained that fairness should remain central to discussions about relationships, insisting that accountability and forgiveness should not be determined by gender.
