Patience Ozokwo recalls her first Nollywood pay of ₦2,000 and how her earnings rose to ₦15,000 as her acting career gathered momentum

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo, popularly known as Mama G, has revealed that she earned ₦2,000 for one of her earliest movie roles, offering a revealing glimpse into the modest financial beginnings of her acting career during Nollywood’s formative years.

Ozokwo shared the recollection during a recent livestream conversation with comedian Carter Efe, where she reflected on the early stages of her journey in the Nigerian film industry and how her earnings gradually increased as she took on more roles.

The actress explained that her next payment rose to ₦5,000, a figure she remembered as significant at the time. Her earnings subsequently increased to ₦8,000 before reaching ₦15,000 for another role.

For Ozokwo, those amounts carried a very different meaning from what they might suggest today. She recalled a period when money was tight and even a relatively small payment could make a meaningful difference.

Her account provides a human perspective on the early economics of Nollywood, an industry that developed rapidly through home-video productions before evolving into the more commercially structured cinema and streaming market seen today.

Ozokwo’s career began before she became one of the most recognisable faces of Nigerian cinema.

She worked as a broadcaster with Radio Nigeria and developed her acting profile through television and stage work before becoming widely known for her film performances.

Her breakthrough came with the 1999 film Authority, after which she became closely associated with powerful, often difficult characters that helped establish her reputation with Nigerian audiences.

The veteran actress continues to work in the industry. She is part of the cast of IKENGA: The Last Festival, a new Nollywood film scheduled for nationwide cinema release on August 21, 2026, alongside Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Beverly Osu, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Zubby Michael, Regina Daniels and Destiny Etiko.
