Nollywood veteran Joke Silva has been appointed head judge for the 12th Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA), a role she described as a “deep responsibility” in overseeing one of Africa’s most prominent film and television award platforms.

The Joke Silva AMVCA head judge appointment was announced during a press conference held in Lagos on Thursday, underscoring the continued evolution of the AMVCA as a major cultural institution dedicated to celebrating excellence in African storytelling and screen production.

Silva expressed appreciation for the trust placed in her, noting that the awards have grown beyond a ceremonial event into a significant platform that recognises artistic achievement across the continent.

She emphasised the importance of honouring creativity that reflects the diversity and depth of African cinema.

This year’s edition of the AMVCA, scheduled to hold in May 2026 in Lagos, will feature 32 award categories, including the introduction of two new Indigenous Language categories for North and Central Africa.

Organisers say the expansion is aimed at improving representation and inclusivity across different regions of the continent.

Silva highlighted that the adjudication process would prioritise fairness, credibility and professional integrity, stressing that the panel’s responsibility extends beyond popularity to evaluating storytelling excellence and craft.

Her remarks pointed to a commitment to maintaining rigorous standards in selecting winners.

Nominees for the awards are expected to be unveiled on March 29, 2026, generating growing anticipation among filmmakers, actors and audiences across Africa.

The announcement is expected to set the stage for a competitive showcase of talent in the lead-up to the main ceremony.
