Bisola Aiyeola says marriage is not central to her existence as she opens up on single motherhood, relationships and finding the right partner

Nollywood actress and media personality Bisola Aiyeola has said marriage is not the defining purpose of her life, stressing that although she is open to getting married, she is content with where she is in life.

The actress made the remarks during an interview on the In My Opinion podcast, where she discussed relationships, domestic responsibilities and her experience raising a child as a single mother.

Aiyeola explained that she would consider marriage if she found a suitable partner but maintained that her happiness and sense of fulfilment do not depend on being married.

“For me, if marriage does come, I will get married. But it is not the core of my existence,” she said.

The actress, who turned 40 in January, also spoke about raising her 17-year-old daughter and the challenges that come with single parenthood.

She acknowledged that raising a child alone is not easy and said she reminds her daughter that carrying the responsibility of bringing up a child should not ideally fall on one person.

“I have a 17-year-old daughter. Being a single parent and looking after my daughter, I still let her know that being a single parent is not that easy. That’s not what you should aspire to be,” she said.

Despite the challenges, Aiyeola expressed satisfaction with her life, adding that she loves herself and considers this period one of the best times of her life.

The reality television star also reflected on changing attitudes towards marriage, particularly among women who feel they shoulder most household responsibilities even when they are in relationships.

According to Aiyeola, some women question the value of remaining in marriages where domestic duties, childcare and financial responsibilities are not shared fairly.

She noted that women may be expected to contribute financially, give birth and care for their children, while also managing household responsibilities, including shortly after childbirth.

Aiyeola suggested that such imbalances can make some women reconsider marriage when the relationship does not offer the partnership they expect.

“Women are like, you know what, what’s the point? If I still have to do everything myself, why do I have to be tied to this man all in the name of marriage?” she said.

However, she acknowledged the importance of marriage as a social institution, distinguishing her personal outlook from a rejection of marriage itself.

“Marriage as an institution is essential for the society,” she added.
